An entrepreneurial venture which is typically a newly emerged, fast-growing business that aims to meet a marketplace need by developing or offering an innovative product, process or service.

A style of work that involves a shared working environment, often an open plan office. Unlike in a typical office environment, those working in coworking space are usually not employed by the same organization.

Seed Capital:

The initial capital used to start a business. Seed capital often comes from the company founders’ personal assets, or can also come from friends and family.

Incubators help companies through childhood. They nurture startups through their very first stages, by providing mentoring, business training, office space, and access to professional networks. Compared to accelerators, the ideas nurtured in incubators can gestate for longer periods of time and the incubator takes a much larger amount of equity.

Someone who teaches or gives help and advice to a less experienced and often younger entrepreneur. A little known piece of advice is to have various mentors that can help you with different aspects of your startup’s growth, instead of looking for one ‘one size fits all’ mentor.

Venture capital:

A type of private equity, provided to emerging startups, in which there is usually some kind of risk but the startup is seen to have long-term growth potential.

Venture capital companies usually take something in exchange for equity in the companies they invest in. Venture capitalists take on the risk of financing risky startups hoping that some of the startups they support will become successful.

Accelerators guide companies from adolescence to adulthood. They take single-digit chunks of equity in already developed ideas in return for small amounts of capital and mentorship. They generally consist of three to four month programmes, at the end of which the start-ups ‘graduate’.

Business Angels:

Business Angels or private investors are people with background knowledge or interest in a certain field and the ability to invest. These investors assist in the early stages to drive the project forward and add value. Usually their motivations are not strictly economic, but also driven by professional satisfaction.

SWOT Analysis:

Is a process that identifies the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats of an organization. SWOT is a basic, analytical framework that assesses what an organization can and cannot do, as well as its potential opportunities and threats.
